Upgrade project to R27 intersection at Sunningdale commences

The City of Cape Town is supporting and facilitating the road upgrades at the intersection of the R27, Berkshire Boulevard and Big Boulevard in Sunningdale. The project will be funded by Garden Cities as part of their development contribution related to the proposed new Sunningdale developments. The contractor has commenced with the initial construction work alongside the R27 this week.
Residents are advised that this work forms part of broader road improvement projects in the area, undertaken by Garden Cities to accommodate future developments. The project was initiated to improve the current traffic flow at the intersection and also to facilitate the impact of the traffic volumes resulting from the future developments in the Blaauwberg North area, such as Sunningdale and Sandown Developments framework.
‘The City will always support road projects, which take a proactive approach to road network planning, especially if the purpose is to implement targeted projects to assist in the alleviation of the current and future traffic congestion in an ever growing area such as Sunningdale.
‘This is a great example of the partnership and working relationship we have with Garden Cities, as they continue to invest in areas of our road network, which surrounds their existing and planned developments. This upgrade project will definitely improve the traffic flow at this intersection and will accommodate the expected increase in traffic in the coming years,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Residents can look forward to additional traffic lanes on all legs of the intersection as well as the following upgrades :
Non-motorised transport facilities along Big Bay Boulevard
New Street lighting along the area being upgraded
New road signs and markings
The upgrading of the actual traffic signal at the intersection
Additional work to be done will include the implementation of stormwater drainage facilities and underground services, the relocation of existing services where required and construction of kerbs and channels.
This is a 13-month long project with the provisional completion date of April 2023, pending unforeseen delays and inclement weather. Construction will take place in a phased approach to minimise disruptions to traffic, however residents are advised to make use of alternate routes where possible.
‘We ask that all road users be patient during the course of this project, as there will be phases which have more of an impact on the traffic than others. If we have the cooperation from residents, we can ensure that these works remain on schedule so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of these upgrades in a year’s time,’ says councillor Quintas.
The project will consist of three phases:
Phase one of the project will take place alongside the R27 and Big Bay Boulevard with the construction of the additional lanes
The second phase will include the construction of one portion of the new lane on Berkshire Boulevard and the adjustment of levels on a portion of the intersection and Big Bay Boulevard
In phase three, the remaining portion of the new lane on Berkshire Boulevard will be completed
The works will be implemented during the week from 07:30 and 17:30 and on Saturdays when needed.
Traffic management will be guided around construction throughout the project.
Residents to note that traffic moving in both directions on the R27, Berkshire Boulevard and Big Bay Boulevard will be affected. Road users are therefore requested to adhere to the signage.
